I’ve always loved to travel. Since my childhood when my Mother would pack us 5 kids into the family station wagon & drive us from Salt Lake City to Laconia, New Hampshire every other summer, I had an affinity for road trips & adventure. While putting myself through college, I worked at Starwood Preferred Guest as an agent, studying the fantastic resorts & hotels all over the world, wondering how I could enjoy such travel. I didn’t know how working at Starwood would change my life.
One day, a wonderful lady named Brenda phoned in, who happened to be a Travel Agent. As we booked her hotel arrangements, she convinced me that I must take a cruise someday. A year later, while my best friend & I were at a 25-year old crossroads, I called Brenda to book our 14-day Mediterranean cruise on the Golden Princess.
It was the best month of our lives! Best friends backpacking through Europe & gluttonizing for any adventure on our first cruise ship, the Golden Princess. It was too good to be true. Then 9/11 hit while we were visiting the ruins in Ephesus, Turkey. All we wanted was to be back on American soil with our families while our ship sat somewhat stranded in Turkey. In light of a grim situation, Princess went above & beyond, keeping us informed, flying empty 747s to retrieve their passengers, & inviting us all to stay onboard as long as necessary until our safe return home was possible. This was a company for whom I wanted to work.
While watching the production shows during our cruise, I yearned to be back on the stage. Upon our return, I submitted my audition materials to Princess, determined to work for them. After a brief audition & several months after my initial experience of Princess, I was hired as a Guest Entertainer & worked with them for five years before moving over to Holland America.
Life has a funny way of coming full circle. As a performer, I ended up returning to the Golden Princess, where I met my first husband & performed alongside one of the singers I initially met on the ship as a guest, the incredibly talented & wonderful Mauricio Martinez. I’ve stayed in touch with Brenda all these years and she has become like family to me; she also owns the Host Travel Agency with which I was affiliated for 5 years. 14 years later, I'm still performing at sea making a living doing what I love & seeing the world, having been to over 80 countries in 6 continents.
The message? Accept the Goddess of Fortune into your life, accepting her gifts & always making the most of every opportunity (Richest Man in Babylon). Keep your eyes open & soul willing to embrace the moments now and what they might turn out to be.
Now, let’s go travel!
